SAB – A responsible corporate citizen

South Africa's constitution is pre-eminent in the protection of human rights, the promotion of understanding between ethnic and cultural groups and the development of its people towards a more equitable society.

SAB prides itself on being a leading corporate citizen in South Africa, working at the interface between commerce and society – committing its resources to Black Economic Empowerment, to employee training programmes, to paying taxes, preserving the environment, building safe communities, fighting HIV/Aids and providing a return to its shareholders.

In partnership with government

SAB's key stakeholders are the government and the communities that make up the people of South Africa. The government, at both national and regional level, plays an active role in developing previously disadvantaged communities – but resources are limited. SAB's social investment strategy s to leverage its influence and resources to assist government achieve its developmental goals.

Following the principles of sustainable development

A key government mandate is to develop communities in a sustainable way – enabling target communities to take ownership of programmes and ultimately sustain themselves. SAB applies this principle to all its projects and programmes, believing strongly in a future which must be secured for this and following generations.

New challenges

Continued urbanisation of SA's population is shifting SAB's market and thus the focus of SAB's Corporate Social Investment. SAB's strategy now embraces more fairly all stakeholders, including consumers, employees and all social groups.

Strategic Focus Areas

SAB has developed its thinking about social investment in line with the prevailing needs of the country.National Projects follow a proactive strategy, while regional projects follow a responsive strategy. Regional Projects are equally important in that communities across the length and breadth of South Africa have diverse needs. SAB recognises the relevance of these local needs and has structured its delivery systems accordingly. Each region has its own community development team responding to the following focus areas:

  • Social Health (which includes HIV/Aids awareness programmes)
  • Economic Health (including crime prevention)
  • Environmental Health (includes environmental education, waste management and environmental awareness)
